The Seed

Designing a Space & an Experience

In this project, the hypothetical “client” was randomly drew from a pool of “popular dream companies”, imaging that we are currently working for them. The prompted objective was to design a convention space at a trade show for the client company.

YouTube ended up becoming my fictional client company. The basic requirement of the designed space was to include a reception desk, a lounge area, and a demonstration area. The size of the booth was limited to 25’x40’. The design was also supposed to include a set of 3 Swag for about 2000 attendees to receive; the total budget needed to be under $100,000.

Secondary Research

Even though most people might already know that YouTube is a popular video-sharing platform, I still went a step back and conducted some company research. To better understand my client and create a space that fits the characteristics and core values of the company, I went from the company brand, culture, goals, to its audiences. I also investigated its competitors and similar company brands in the field, such as Vimeo, Flickr, Netflix, Hulu, and more.

Through my research, I learned that YouTube makes most of its profit from ads and partnerships with Youtubers and brands. Most videos on the platform are user generated or corporated. Therefore, although it seems like there is no more need for YouTube to promote itself because nearly everyone knows it, there is still an opportunity to focus on maintaining relationships with viewers and attracting potential partnerships with new-born YouTubers.

Sketching + Prototyping

After having a general direction and purpose, I went on with more detailed planning of the given space. I divided the convention space into three main sections: reception, activity/demonstration, and lounge/communication spaces. I sketched out the idea of turning the demonstration section into a video booth, where each attendee has the opportunity to experience the feeling of “being a YouTuber.” I also realized that inviting famous YouTubers and possibly celebrities to give speaker talks in the lounge area is a great way to attract people and increase the participants.

I referenced my concept sketches to lay out a floor plan and build a visualization of the convention space in Rhino 3D. Then, I rendered the environment in KeyShot and Photoshop for a better representation of the designed space.
